On this very day, forty nine years ago, we asserted our rights to shape our own destiny. We asserted those rights because we believed we would build upon the great traditions of scholarship, freedom and entrepreneurship for which our forbearers were renowned all over West Africa. We have sometimes fallen short of those great traditions. But this nation has over and over again risen up to face the challenge with resolute action. |

CALLED IN BY THE POLICE President Ernest Bai Koroma yesterday 20th April 2010 held a high-level meeting with consultants and contractors responsible for the rehabilitation and/or construction of health facilities, particularly medical stores, around the country. Welcoming the group to State House, the Head of State said, “April 27th is exactly 7 days to go, and we gave been gearing ourselves up, getting ourselves ready to introduce the free healthcare package that we believe will impact greatly on the welfare of our people,” but he said there were still various aspects to look at, one of which was the state of the health infrastructure “the area you are directly involved in.” |

President Koroma Inspects Health Facilities in Mattru Jong, Bonthe, Pujehun, Bo, and Moyamba |

President Ernest Bai Koroma today made a whirlwind helicopter tour of the southern province in cross-checking health facilities as to their readiness for the April 27th 2010 deadline for the commencement of the plan for the free delivery of services and medication to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and under-five children. The on-the-spot visitations took the President and entourage first to Mattru Jong (mainland Bonthe District), Bonthe Island, Pujehun, Bo, and Moyamba. Accompanied by Deputy Minister of Health Mohamed D. Koroma, senior government medical officials, and representatives from supporting organizations including UNFPA, UNICEF, and the National Authorising Office, President Koroma ensured he visited every government medical facility in each town, inspecting available infrastructure, talking to health officials, and sympathizing with patients. |
