REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR. ERNEST BAI KOROMA, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE, ON THE

OCCASION OF THE PRESENTATION OF CREDENTIALS BY AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE OF THE REPUBLIC OF MALI TO SIERRA LEONE ON MONDAY 12TH APRIL 2010

Your Excellency Mr. Ambassador,

I am delighted to accept the Letter of Credence by which my brother, the President of the Republic of Mali, His Excellency Amadu Toumani Toure, has accredited you as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Mali to the Republic of Sierra Leone. I also wish to accept the letter of recall of your predecessor.

PRESIDENT KOROMA EXPLAINS SLBC TRANSFORMATION, VISITS STUDIOS

President Ernest Bai Koroma has told Commissioners of the Independent Media Commission (IMC) that he had always believed in the transformation of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) from a state-owned broadcaster to a public corporation even before attaining governance. He recalled that as an opposition leader, he had called on Parliament to facilitate the transformation, in lieu of what he was going through in terms of having equal access to the then SLBS. “For us to get to this point, it involved a lot of commitment and hard work,” he noted.

A day and half of intensive exchange of views and reflection on the future of peacebuilding in Africa is a thoughtful and noble undertaking. Consolidating peace after a long and harrowing period of carnage, suffering and devastation is an imperative for handling post-conflict recovery. In that regard, I would like to commend the co-facilitators of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission’s five-year review process: the distinguished Permanent Representatives of Ireland, Mexico and our host South Africa -- Ambassadors Ann Anderson, Claude Heller and Baso Sangqu, respectively -- for their foresight in organising this forum and their judicious choice of the theme: Securing Sustainable Peace in Africa: Coordination, Coherence and Partnerships.

It is with profound gratitude and humility that I receive this coveted Africa Peace Award on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone. Today’s award ceremony is in recognition of the resilience, candour and dedicated commitment of the people of Sierra Leone to the attainment of lasting peace and democracy in our country.
